We lost a member of our cycling family...

As you all may have heard, we lost a member of our cycling family, Luis Varela, who passed away on Tuesday, November 22nd. We at SWE have been silent on this matter as we have sought to respect the family’s privacy. We have had the family’s privacy interests in mind throughout this whole ordeal and wanted to meet with them before making a statement. We can assure you all Luis left this world doing what he loved, alongside us all. As fathers ourselves, we hope our sons grow up to be half the man Luis’ son, John is. John will be with us next year, for his first time, to carry on his father’s legacy in the race. We are absolutely honored to hear that.

All of our hearts go out to this beautiful family. They have asked us all to see if we can find any photos and/or videos to share that may contain Luis in the race or elsewhere. Luis was also at the 2011 Triple Crown back in October. Someone may have pictures or videos of that too. If you come across anything please don’t hesitate to post that information on our Facebook Page. Luis will forever be a part of this race in the future.

The family has asked Jose Hernandez to be the point of contact for any further questions. He is a member of the Something Wicked Events Facebook Group.

Something Wicked 2011

Well, we are through another cycle of the race and we are amped from all the positive feedback! We are always trying to outdo ourselves from last year and will continue to attempt to. We have fine tuned some things that work and added some new features this year. We hope you all had as much fun as we did!

We would like to thank all who helped out; our wives and girlfriends, the volunteers and the companies who supplied us with products.

A special shout out to Trail Patrol, who performed flawlessly all day. They were put through their paces yesterday as most of you know. We had a serious injury early in the day. All of us have that racer in our thoughts and prayers. Trail Patrol has an outstanding relationship with us at SWE and we look forward to many years of working together.

Nikita of Just Finish Timing also, once again did an incredible job. There were so few errors to correct we were able to get the awards ceremony going very quickly. Thank you to Nikita and his lovely assistant!

The post race chili was a hit once again and can be expected to be there again next year!

Huge thanks to James Huddleston for the burn barrel. I know everyome appreciated his handiwork as well as the warmth of the fire.

We are pleased to report that park is in a better, cleaner state than it was found in. ALL trash and course markings are gone, including all visible nonrace trash. Thanks to all racers for keeping the trail virtually litter free.

Thank you to Corey and the rest of Davidson Electronics for loaning us the PA system!

Thanks to our friend Rich Squillace (SS Rich) for his hard work in keeping CP the gem that it is.

Thank you to Scott Rath for representing Cadre in the race and hammering it out ALL DAY. We love you brother and you are a perfect fit in this family. We now have a dog in the fight. PGLC.

We would like to wish Jim Sivec good luck on his relocation to the south. He is a strong competitor that we've raced against all over the east coast and we will miss him dearly. A true gentleman. Congratulations on your 1st place W with Rob in the Male Duo class!

THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY:

It is 5:59:45 as Rob DeDora emerges from the woods to close out lap #7. He has 15 seconds to cross the field and go over the timing mat, some 600-700 feet away, to begin his final lap. We are SCREAMING at him to fight the crazy cross wind and turn it on. Every spectator has their eyes on Rob and are cheering him on. The guy crosses the mat at exactly 6:00:00 and begins an eighth lap. It was worth standing there all day just to witness those 15 seconds. UNBELIEVABLE effort Rob! You have had a great season in 2011 with your upgrade to Cat1 in the XC races. Proud to have you on the home team!

Lastly, we thank all of the racers for joining us. We Cadre racers spend a lot of time training and racing ourselves all year and it's a nice change to view this from the other side. We are proud to know you all! To all the endurance first timers; welcome to the family and the addiction! Many, many racers outdid themselves yesterday and we have the pictures to prove it!

We are mere days from SWE 6 Hours of Cathedral Pines 2011. The Shoog-a-cutioner has the cowbells polished and at the ready. All systems are in place to show you all a good time and to try and outdo ourselves. There will be plenty of room for every racer as well as teams to set up a pit at their vehicles. There is space for everyone to have an EZ Up tent. This year we will have vegan AND beef chili for you all post race. Stick around after with a bowl and keep warm by the custom made WiCkEd BuRn BaRrEl. We will have a raging inferno going in there for soul cleansing purposes....assuming you survive what awaits you. Bring some extra cash along as we will have the usual Wicked Wares available to the lucky, cool cats who purchase. (alternate tees, alternate pink tees for Wicked Women, hoodies, etc.) All merch will go on sale during registration before the race and if last year is any comparison, it will all be gone pre-race as well. Get 'em while they are hot! Enter the after life looking FLY!

We chose to combine the Pro categories into Pro Open Men and Pro Open Women. With that change comes a cash payout 3 deep for the Pro men and women (1st-$300, 2nd-$150, 3rd-$50).

With the aforementioned niceties out of the way, we will leave you to ponder the choice you have made to partake in this event. Have you left things undone on this side? Can you depart knowing you have lead a just life? What sort of legacy are you leaving behind? As we begin to turn the screws on you, remember this was all self induced. As you cry out in pain, you can only move forward. Get your houses in order.

We are proud to know you all and call you friends.

Though we cannot take all the credit for the fluidity and success of the race. We would like to say A HUGE thank you to the CLIMB Trail Patrol for their presence at the race. This year there was a much larger group of them patrolling and assisting with injuries. They did a flawless job and we are happy to build on the relationship we have with them going forward. We hope to have them at every race, year after year. Thank you from the 5 of us at sWe.

Another group to be thanked would be the volunteers who helped with parking, course marshaling, and registration. Without you all, the race does not happen. Your generosity is well received and we thank you.

The trail condition could not have been better. Partly due to Mother Nature, but primarily due to the selfless efforts of Rich Squillace (SS Rich), Cathedral Pines Trail Steward. Thank you Rich, from all of us!!!

Nikita of Just Finish Timing did a bang up job as well with the results. This has taken a lot of pressure off of us. Last year, all the results were compiled by hand = ridiculously difficult.

You, the racers. We put this event on for you. Without you it would not be a success. Thank you for coming out to Long Island and participating in something wicked.

We were happy to see many of you achieve your goals and others surprise themselves with what they were capable of. We vow to continue to put on this race as long as we possibly can and show you all the best time possible. Everyone who attends is a true sportsman (and woman) and shows the same respect and courtesy to their fellow racers that we witness and experience at the ultras we participate in. We had racers from PA, CA, MD, MA, NH, and elsewhere and are sure they feel the same way.

We are grateful to be able to use CP for our event. The sWe Staph swept the course & field and cleaned all evidence of November 20 by high noon, the day after. The park is in a cleaner state than it was prior to the race. We promise that this will always be paramount.

While on this topic, we would like to thank all of you for keeping the course and pit litter to a minimum. Our final sweep/cleanup only produced about 1/2 of a yard bag's worth of trash.

REGARDING RACE RESULTS - as with any race, there were a few inconsistencies. We are in the process of getting any/all issues rectified with the scorer and should have final results posted within the next 24 hours. If you placed top three and were unable to stick around for your medal, we will be mailing it out to you...don't worry about postage fees, we got it.

May the Lord bless and keep you. May the light of his face shine upon you....until November 2011. Then, once again, you are ours.

Notes Regarding Camping & USAC Categories

IMPORTANT NOTES REGARDING CAMPING
Important reminder regarding camping at Suffolk County Parks, Cathedral Pines.

We've had a few inquiries regarding overnight camping, tenting, recreational vehicles, and pop-up trailers on the event field.

There is absolutely no tent camping at this facility after November 1st, the parks department will make no exceptions.
RV's, Trailers, and Pop-Ups are not permitted on the race field.

This facility will be winterized at the time of the race.
Water, electrical, waste, showers, and grounds restrooms will not be available (there will be porta lavs for racers).

Camping is permitted for completely SELF CONTAINED/SUPPORTED Recreational Vehicles ONLY!
Camping fees are the sole responsibility of the individual(s) wishing to overnight.
Camping fees are paid directly to the Suffolk County Parks Department.

All camping arrangements must be made directly with Cathedral Pines - Suffolk County Parks : 631.852.5500

Something Wicked Events, LLC is in no way involved with securing, reserving, or making any other camping arrangements.

IMPORTANT NOTES REGARDING USAC CATEGORY RULES
We are adhering strictly to USAC rules. There will be USAC official(s) at our race. To avoid any misunderstandings race day..... To compete as CAT 1 you MUST hold a CAT 1 license and present it at check in. You CANNOT "elect" to race CAT 1.

For a racer to become CAT 1 they must:
- Race CAT 2 and finish top 5 in 5 races and REQUEST an upgrade from USAC.
- Submit a resume to USAC and request an upgrade based on race history.

We love you all, but be advised there will be no favors or "looking the other way" at the race.

We take USAC very seriously are looking to follow all rules which are available to everyone to peruse here http://www.usacycling.org/news/user/story.php?id=4220

There will be Pro racers competing and they, as well as all others, certainly want all race information submitted to USAC to be accurate and within the scope of the rulebook.

As we strive to maintain a healthy relationship with our local parks department, we kindly ask that you obey all of our parking requests; we'll explain this to you upon arrival.With the strong support of Suffolk County Parks Department we are able to use this parcel of land to bring to you our Six Hour Endurance Race.

IMPORTANT USAC NOTE REGARDING USE OF MULTIPLE BIKES
Those of you who raced last year may remember that we made an amendment to the official USAC cycling rules and allowed racers to use more than one bicycle. This year there will be no such amendment.

Racers WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO USE MORE THAN ONE BICYCLE.
What does that mean? It means you MUST use only the bicycle you start the race with.

Racers or prohibited from "cannibalizing" other bikes to fix/repair their race bike.

That's enough dribble for now.
Hopefully you have been getting your saddle time in.
Those of you who remember, your ass will be sore....those of you who are first-timers, get ready for a world of hurt!

Come on down and help beat in this new addition to Long Island's ever growing trail systems!!!
There will be groups of all abilities riding so there will be fun for all!

SWE will be providing pizza and drinks to all at no cost to you. Your families are welcome to attend also. We just wanted to help CLIMB get this new trail online and ready for use!

There is no obligation by any riders other than to show up for some lunch and fun times. Hopefully, you will also do a couple of laps to start bedding the trail in too.

Keep your eyes peeled while riding the trail as there will be prizes "hidden" along the trail such as free entries to SWE 6HOCP and possibly some other goodies!!

DIRECTIONS

SUFFOLK COUNTY PARKS: MANORVILLE HILLS PARK

LIE to exit 70 south (Cty Rd. 111)
Take C.R. 111 down approximately 1.5 miles.
Travel about 1/2 mile south of Halsey Manor Rd on the east (left) side of the divided highway.
The trailhead entrance is on the other side of the road marked by a Suffolk County Parks sign.
You will have to pass the trailhead and make a U turn further down to come back up 111, as the trailhead is on the other side of the road.
Look for the Manorville Hills County Park sign and follow the gravel driveway to the main parking area.
All parking is "head-in". We may use the equestrian lot as well. Overflow parking can go near the exit of the roadway before 111 on the right, also "head-in" parking.
